In inclusion, expertise matters

In my inclusion work with leaders, I talk a lot about branding and consumers and how it interlinks with Inclusion.

Every brand and its leaders must work through and find their balance between the following spectrum:

  • brand as *activist* (think Lush, Body Shop, and other brands that may even have a Head/Manager of Activism) and;

  • brand as *business only*, meaning that they may for example have a policy banning all political conversations at work (think Basecamp and Coinbase) as they believe they are in the business of generating profit, not a social impact organisation/business.

Either spectrum could mean that a brand ends up alienating its consumers and employers and therefore becomes a brand that lacks relevancy.

However, it is also true that one extreme might leverage a brand in the marketplace and ensure relevancy and growth in market share.

The same can be said with finding a balance between both sides of the continuum. What might be positive for one brand could be negative for another.

The key is meeting your consumers and people where they are at (historical and current research is needed here) and doing the work with integrity (i.e don't reinvent your brand as an activist for equality if your people don't understand the basics of Inclusion - do the work with integrity; inclusion is a journey not an end destination).
